I was reading a thread about great Apple Pie. I admit Apple Pie is not my favorite pie, but would love to have the ultimate Apple Pie recipe.
*Your* secret to great apple pie?
So, what is it?
I know that apple pie — and how to make — is well discussed all over the internet.
But how about sharing your secret tips and tricks to making apple pie special, unique, or just that itty-bitty bit better than the other guy’s.
Do you use a combo of different apples for the filling?
Add butter to the apples? Maybe sour cream or buttermilk?
Macerate?
Special spice additions, e.g. star anise or cardamom for example?
Anyway, curious as to your special techniques or secrets to great apple pie.
Hope someone out there has their grandma’s secret recipe their willing to share
It’s all about the apples you use. My favorites are Gravensteins and Pippins. Get out of the grocery store and find a neighbor or farmer with a backyard tree or orchard. Take the apples home and make pie immediately. You can read an extended version of this comment in the following blog post:http://thekalechronicles.com/2011/09/03/gravenstein-apple-pie/
Thank you for sharing your post. Checked out your lovely blog and that really helped. I will be trying those apples. thanks a bunch!!!
It is all about the apples you use. I like a good tart apple for my apple pie. My neighbor has an apple tree that I get apples from every year. My mom says it a Transparent apple.
My recipe is very basic. To my sliced apples, I add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, butter, and lemon juice with a top crust, sometimes I do a brown sugar, oatmeal topping. Hope that you come up with a yummy recipe.
Hey Nicki! Hope you share that recipe
I have three recipes to give a try, and when I make them I’ll post the winner. I have a wonderful pie crust recipe just waiting for a good apple pie to be made
